The Otto Loewi Minerva Center was founded in 1986. Under the directorship of Prof. Itzhak Parnas, it established itself as a unique Minerva center, with its own laboratory. The laboratory, located at the Inter-University Institute in Eilat, supported numerous scientific collaborations between Israel and Germany, and the Otto Loewi Conference became a prestigious meeting amongst the international scientific community. In April 2003, Prof. Yosef Yarom became director. The change in directorship was followed by the nomination of a new advisory board, chaired by Prof. Uwe Heinemann, which decided to reorganize the center's activities and invite new scientists as members. The center will continue to focus on cellular approaches to the study of brain function. The emphasis, however, has shifted to system neurobiology of the vertebrate brain. The center continues to uphold the importance of multidisciplinary approach to brain research, where molecular, morphological and physiological data are intimately combined with theory and pooled to form a comprehensive view of the problem at hand. The main goal of the center will be to promote and support Israel-German collaborations. In order to achieve this goal the Otto Loewi Center will focus its activities on three major issues: - The development of the laboratory in Eilat, with year round research and joint projects.
- The establishment of an international course in modern neurophysiology techniques.
- The continuation of the fine tradition of the Otto Loewi Conference.
