The second main thrust of the center will be an international course in neurophysiology advanced techniques. The course will be given by top scientists mainly from Israel and Germany and will accommodate 16-20 from both countries as well as 4-8 students from the international community. This international course will serve two aims. First, it will expose students in their early stages of graduate studies to state-of-the-art neurobiological methods. Second, in line with the goals of the Minerva centers, it should initiate new relationships between young scientists from both countries, which will lead to the establishment of future collaborative work between Israel and Germany.
The first course took place in September 2004, 18 graduate or postgraduate students from Israel, Germany and Italy participated. The intensive 10-day course combine frontal lectures and experimental work focused on "In-vivo Intracellular Recordings". The students learned to perform intracellular recordings from anesthetized animals using both the whole cell patch and sharp electrode techniques. The lectures, given by top researchers from all over Europe, emphasized the power of this approach in solving major questions in brain research.
This Year International Course “Invivo Intracellular Recording Techniques”.
After the successful first two International courses held in 2004 and 2005, the Otto Loewi Center will organized the third and last session of the “Invivo Intracellular Recording Techniques” which will take place in the Otto Loewi Center laboratory at the Inter-University Institute in Eilat. Invivo intracellular recording became a very interesting and powerful tool in the study of neuronal and network properties Insitu. The goal of this course is to give young scientists who want to enter this field the first essential practical steps. In addition, renowned scientists will stress the capabilities of this experimental approach by describing and demonstrating their on going experimental research.
Date: 3-15 September 2006
Participants: the course will accommodate up to 24 students in their late Ph.D. studies or early Post Doc training.
Framework: the course will consist of frontal lectures and laboratory work on an intensive basis. The students will work on 4 different setups, 2 sharp electrodes sets and 2 patch electrodes sets enabling recordings from the Barrel Cortex and the Cerebellum.
Teachers: world known scientist will present their work and lay down the technical background, highly experienced post docs and Ph.D. students will be the instructors for the lab work.
Accommodation: the Otto Loewi Center will provide room and board to the participants at the IUI facilities in Eilat.
